How to play FLAMES

FLAMES has filled the back pages of school notebooks for generations. Here is the traditional way to play it on paper:

  1. Write both names, one under the other.
  2. Cross out each letter the names share, one pair at a time. Rahul and Anjali share an a and an l.
  3. Count the letters left over. For Rahul and Anjali that's 7.
  4. Count round F-L-A-M-E-S by that number and strike out where you land. Keep counting from the next letter until one letter is left.

Our FLAMES calculator does exactly this, so the answer matches the one you'd get in your notebook.

Questions people ask

What does FLAMES stand for?

F is Friends, L is Love, A is Affection, M is Marriage, E is Enemies and S is Siblings.

How is FLAMES calculated?

Write both names and cross out the letters they share, one match at a time. Count the letters left over. Then count round the word FLAMES by that number and strike out the letter you land on, starting the next count from the following letter, until one letter is left. That letter is your result.

Do spaces and surnames count in FLAMES?

Spaces and symbols are ignored. Most people use first names only, but you can include surnames. The result changes, which is half the fun.

Is the FLAMES game accurate?

It's a playful school-days game, not a prediction. Enjoy it, share it and don't plan a wedding on it… unless it says Marriage. 😉
